Meet Mayra
The visionary leader behind Secoya Leadership Consulting

I have always found peace and wonder in exploring nature. During my visit to Muir Woods National Monument, the towering trees took my breath away. There, among them, stood the majestic redwoods, their immense heights both intimidating and inspiring. What moved me most was not just their grandeur, but the way they thrived together—sharing roots beneath the soil and offering mutual support through life's challenges. As I considered the values that have truly guided my work, the sequoias felt like a natural choice for inspiration. Their deep-rooted connections remind me of the power of community and collaboration, values that resonate throughout my academic and professional journey and which I carry in my DNA coming from a long line of strong mujeres who are community life givers.
My family history is deeply rooted in resilience and the power of education. I was born into a single-parent household after my father passed away when I was very young. My mother, who was pregnant with my sister at the time, raised us as the head of household with my grandmother’s support. This experience taught me early on that reliance on others could be fleeting, emphasizing the need for personal responsibility and independence. My mom always stressed the importance of education as a pathway to security and a better life. Although she faced challenges—initially receiving a technical degree in Mexico that wasn’t recognized in the U.S.—she was determined to further her education. Moving to the States on a student visa, she enrolled in community college, which ultimately played a crucial role in securing her residency. Later in life, she fulfilled her dreams by completing a bachelor's degree shortly before retiring, showcasing her unwavering commitment to education and its profound value in our family.
Alongside my mother was my grandmother, who also valued education despite facing significant barriers. She shared her own experiences of striving for knowledge, illustrating that education was not just an individual pursuit but an anchor for our family. These legacies of perseverance profoundly shaped my own educational journey and professional aspirations, instilling in me a passion for uplifting others through learning and advocacy in community colleges.
In my years working in higher education, particularly in roles focused on student affairs and leadership development, I witnessed firsthand the power of collaboration and community. Each institution I served, whether as an executive leader or as a professor, highlighted the vital importance of nurturing a sense of belonging and fostering leadership that truly serves the needs of the community. I realized that effective leadership is not just about individual achievement but about how we uplift one another, much like those towering redwoods that share their roots and strength.
The Secoya, or giant sequoia, symbolizes resilience and interconnectedness. Just as these remarkable trees stand tall together, strong leaders in our communities must cultivate relationships, nurture talents, and provide support to their fellow leaders. I have been fortunate to lead initiatives that empower underrepresented voices, support student success, and advocate for inclusive practices, embodying the same spirit of collaboration and growth I admired in those forests.
With Secoya Leadership Consulting, I aim to instill that spirit into every interaction, nurturing leaders who are not only prepared but also passionate about uplifting their communities. I envision a space where leaders can cultivate their roots with integrity and purpose, embracing collective success. Just as my family has taught me the value of resilience and education, I am committed to strengthening leadership that thrives on shared values, strategic partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to community well-being. Together, like the enduring presence of the Secoyas, we can leave a lasting impact, ensuring that every individual realizes their potential and contributes to the greater good.
